ZenBusiness Alternatives for Florida LLCs (2026): An Honest Ranking Anchored on Renewal Price

October 15, 2026  ·  8 min read

If you’re looking for a ZenBusiness alternative in Florida, the decision almost never comes down to the formation package price. It comes down to one line item: the registered agent renewal, which ZenBusiness advertises around $199 per year. That charge repeats every year your LLC exists. A $0 or $49 signup fee does not.

So the honest way to rank alternatives is to ignore the headline and ask two questions: what do I pay in year one, and what do I pay in year five? Below is that comparison, plus the Florida-specific details that no filing service changes no matter who you hire.

The only number that compounds

Forming a Florida LLC has a fixed state cost. The Articles of Organization cost $125 filed through Sunbiz, the Florida Division of Corporations’ portal — $100 for the filing itself plus $25 for designating your registered agent. That number is identical whether you file yourself at 2 a.m. or pay someone $300 to do it.

What varies is everything after. Every Florida LLC must maintain a registered agent with a physical Florida street address under the Florida Revised Limited Liability Company Act (Chapter 605, Florida Statutes). If you use a service for that, you’re signing up for a recurring annual charge. Over five years, a $199/yr agent costs $995. A $99/yr agent costs $495. That $500 gap dwarfs any difference in formation packages.

Here’s the five-year math, using advertised pricing at the time of writing. Verify current rates on each provider’s site before you buy — these change.

ProviderFormation (excl. state fee)Registered agent renewalYear 1 total*5-year total*
Florida LLC Pros (Standard)$204.99 all-in$99/yr$204.99$600.99
Northwest Registered Agent~$39~$125/yr~$289~$789
Bizee (formerly Incfile)$0~$119/yr (free yr 1)~$125~$601
ZenBusiness$0 Starter~$199/yr~$324~$1,120
LegalZoom$0 basic~$249/yr~$374~$1,370
DIY on Sunbiz$0$0 (you’re the agent)$125$125

*Includes the $125 state filing fee in year 1 and registered agent renewals in years 2–5. Excludes the annual report, which everyone pays. Our Standard plan is $204.99 with the state fee included, which is why the number looks different from competitors quoting ”+ state fees.”

The ranking, with real tradeoffs

1. Do it yourself on Sunbiz — if you have a Florida street address

This is the genuinely cheapest option and most guides bury it. Florida’s online filing system is one of the better state portals. You fill in the Articles of Organization, name yourself or a member as registered agent, pay $125 by card, and you’re typically processed in 3–5 business days. Florida does not sell expedited processing for online LLC filings, so nobody — not ZenBusiness, not us — can make the state move faster for a fee.

The catch: your registered agent address becomes public record on Sunbiz, searchable by name. If you run your business from your home or you’re forming from out of state, that’s a real downside. You also become personally responsible for being available at that address during business hours to accept service of process.

If you go this route, use the free Florida LLC startup checklist so you don’t miss the EIN, operating agreement, and bank account steps that come after the filing.

2. A flat-fee Florida-focused service with a sub-$100 agent renewal

Full disclosure: this is our category. We’re a Florida-focused filing service — not a 50-state generalist — and our registered agent renews at $99/yr, roughly half of what ZenBusiness charges. The pitch isn’t that we file better Articles of Organization. The state form is the state form. The pitch is that the recurring cost is lower and the package price includes the $125 state fee instead of tacking it on at checkout.

The honest limitation: if you later expand into Georgia, Texas, or Delaware, we’re not your multi-state registered agent. A national provider is.

3. Northwest Registered Agent — best for privacy

Northwest’s differentiator is that they let you use their address in more places than most competitors and they have a stated policy against selling customer data. At roughly $125/yr for registered agent service, they’re meaningfully cheaper than ZenBusiness and the support is generally regarded as the best in the industry — actual phone-answering humans.

They’re a solid choice if privacy is your top concern or if you’re forming entities in multiple states.

4. Bizee (formerly Incfile) — cheap year one, read the fine print

Bizee’s free-plus-state-fee formation with a free first year of registered agent service is the lowest year-one price among the national services. Their renewal is also below ZenBusiness. The tradeoff is the upsell density during checkout and the well-documented experience of renewal charges arriving without much warning. If you use them, calendar the renewal date yourself.

5. LegalZoom — the most expensive way to file the same form

LegalZoom’s registered agent renewal is typically the highest in the category, and their formation packages lean on attorney-adjacent branding. If you genuinely need attorney consultation bundled with formation, there’s a case for it. If you need Articles of Organization filed with the Florida Division of Corporations, you are paying a substantial premium for a clerical task. Our side-by-side LegalZoom and ZenBusiness price comparison breaks down where the money actually goes.

When ZenBusiness is actually the right call

Being honest about this: ZenBusiness isn’t a bad company. Their platform is clean, their compliance dashboard is genuinely useful, and if you’re managing entities in six states and want one login for all of them, the convenience may be worth the premium.

They’re a poor fit if you have exactly one Florida LLC and you’re going to use that dashboard twice a year. For that profile, you’re paying roughly $100/yr extra for software you barely open.

The Florida deadlines nobody’s package can change

Whichever provider you choose, these are fixed by the state and worth knowing cold:

  • Annual report: $138.75, due May 1 every year. Filing opens January 1. This is not a tax return — it’s a confirmation of your addresses, managers, and registered agent.
  • $400 late fee after May 1. Florida does not waive it. It is not prorated. May 2 costs the same as August 15.
  • Administrative dissolution. An LLC still unfiled by the fourth Friday of September is administratively dissolved. Reinstatement costs more and creates a gap in your entity’s good standing that lenders and landlords sometimes notice.
  • No general state business license. Florida doesn’t issue one. You may still need county or city local business tax receipts, and professional or industry licenses vary — a contractor, a food truck, and a salon face very different requirements. Check with your county tax collector and the relevant state board, because this genuinely varies by location and trade.
  • No state personal income tax, which is why pass-through taxation of an LLC is particularly attractive here.

Every verified fee and date lives on our Florida LLC facts page if you want the full reference.

Some services bundle annual report filing; some charge separately. We offer it as a standalone $199/yr annual report service — worth it if you’ve ever missed a deadline, unnecessary if you’re disciplined with a calendar reminder.

How to leave ZenBusiness if you’re already with them

Switching registered agents in Florida is straightforward and cheap, and this is the part most people don’t realize:

  1. Sign up with your new registered agent first. You need their consent and Florida address before you file anything.
  2. File the change. You can file a Change of Registered Agent on Sunbiz for a $25 fee — or, if your annual report is coming up anyway, update the registered agent on the annual report itself at no additional cost. If you’re switching in January through April, just wait and do it on the report. That’s a free switch.
  3. Cancel the old service before the renewal date hits. Don’t assume filing the change cancels your billing — it doesn’t.
  4. Update your mailing preferences so legal notices and state correspondence route correctly.

The entire move takes about fifteen minutes and saves roughly $100 a year indefinitely.

What actually matters when you pick

Strip away the marketing and there are four variables:

  • Recurring agent cost. The one that compounds. Weight it heaviest.
  • Whether the state fee is included in the advertised price, or bolted on at checkout.
  • How aggressive the upsells are. Operating agreement templates, “compliance kits,” and banking referrals are where margins live.
  • Whether you need multi-state coverage. If yes, pay for a national provider. If no, don’t.

Things that don’t matter: filing speed claims (Florida’s online processing is 3–5 business days for everyone, and there’s no paid expedite available), “registered agent included free” in year one (check year two), and guarantee language that mostly restates what the state already does.

If you want help with the pieces that come after formation, an EIN filing is $49 and takes a day or two rather than the hour of IRS website navigation. You can also start a Florida LLC filing directly if you’ve made your decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ZenBusiness actually bad for Florida LLCs? No — the filing itself is fine and their platform is well built. The issue is the roughly $199/yr registered agent renewal, which is double what several alternatives charge for an identical legal service in Florida.

Can I be my own registered agent in Florida? Yes, if you’re at least 18, have a physical Florida street address (not a P.O. box), and are available during normal business hours to accept service of process. The downside is that the address becomes public record on Sunbiz, which is why many home-based owners pay for a service instead.

Does switching registered agents cost anything in Florida? A standalone Change of Registered Agent filing on Sunbiz is $25. If you time it with your annual report between January 1 and May 1, you can update the agent on the report at no extra cost.

Will a more expensive service get my Florida LLC approved faster? No. Florida’s online processing runs about 3–5 business days and the Division of Corporations does not offer paid expedited service for online LLC filings, so no provider can buy you a faster approval.

What happens if I miss the May 1 annual report deadline? A flat $400 late fee is added and cannot be waived or prorated. If the report is still unfiled by the fourth Friday of September, the state administratively dissolves the LLC and you’ll have to pay reinstatement fees to restore it.
